T.S. Eliot - the Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and...

How has Eliot used both conventional and Modernist poetic techniques to represent his Modernist concerns? The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and Preludes expresses Eliot’s Modernist concerns about the lack of morals and values in modern society through the use of personas within the urban landscape and the urban society. Modern man’s lifestyle of repetition of trivial tasks and the lack of meaningful things in life is represented and emphasised through the use of alliteration, metaphor, fragmentation and word choice. The urban landscape is employed by Eliot in Preludes to demonstrate the isolated desertion of a modern city. The fog is compared to a stray cat, crafting and cunning, attempting to get into the house, the intrusive nature of pollution is emphasised by this. Prufrock is overwhelmed by the urban environment and society and attempts to escape through his fantasy, â€Å"we have lingered in the chambers of the sea† but the modern landscape proves inescapable and Prufrock is swallowed by the demands and expectations of society, â€Å"till human voices wake us and we drown.† The modern society is also used by Eliot to express his Modernist concerns of the lack of meaning and values in life, the superficiality of society and the lack of individuality of the people. In Preludes, fragmentation is used to demonstrate the broken views of the people of modern society who can no longer see themselves in a wholistic way. Fragmentation is shown through enjambment to create broken stanzas to disorientate readers, emphasising the confusions of society. Eliot intentionally refers to the people of the city only as â€Å"eyes† and â€Å"feet† and refers to the people collectively, â€Å"one thinks of all the hand that are raising dingy shades in a thousand furnished rooms† and the people with â€Å"all its muddy feet that press to early coffeeShow MoreRelated T.S Eliot’s Preludes and The Love Song of J.Alfred. Changing The Face Of Poverty - 1238 Words

Words provoke preconceived ideas and images in the mind, when it comes to a situation like poverty these preconceived notions can have undesirable and unintended consequences. Diana George examines the semantics and the imagery of the word poverty in her article titled â€Å"Changing the Face of Poverty; Nonprofits and the Problem of Representation. While also addressing the issue of the perception poverty and what someone in poverty truly looks like (676). Prof. George is arguing that organizations like Habitat for Humanity, which are created to help people in poverty actually perpetuate the wrong image of what someone in poverty looks like (678). Most organizations created to help those in need, especially those in the US tend to portray poverty as what is seen and thought of as living conditions in Third World countries (683). In reality, poverty is all around each and every one of us in this country on a daily basis, and people might not always recognize it for what it is (681,6 82). Furthermore, the majority of people living in poverty in the United States do not live like or look like someone living in a Third World country. But in reality they are still living in poverty nonetheless (682,683). Organizations that portray people living in poverty here in the US as totally devastated and completely impoverished are doing a disservice to the people they are attempting to help. The Debate Between Faith and Science - 805 Words

In today’s world there is an ongoing debate between faith and science. The extraordinary advances of science have sometimes led to the belief that it is capable of answering by itself all of mans questions and resolving all his problems. Some have concluded that by now there is no longer any need for God. It has been said that one must choose between faith and science: either one embraces one or believes in the other. People seem to have faith belief in God as creator of life and some have scientific beliefs in the spontaneous generation of life from inanimate matter (Wright 111). Between faith and science there will always be conflict. Biblical information about the relationship between God and his world is foundational to developing a Christian view of science and biology. In the article entitled â€Å"Looking at Nature through Other Eyes: God’s Governance of Nature in the Religion-Science Debate†, it takes a closer look at Intelligent Design (ID) and God’s Governance of nature. ID is explained as a meager substitute for biblical notions of creation, providence and divine wisdom (Cook 281). It seems that ID has made numerous conclusions on naturalism. J.P. International Business

Question: Discuss about theInternational Business. Answer: Introduction: Walmarts business activities are determined by the organizational structure of the company. The organizational structure of the company helps the organization to solve its business related problems in an efficient manner. In accordance with Walmart, the organizational structure depicts the way in which people will react to the challenges at the workplace. However, in the long history of Walmart, it is growing and flourishing at both national as well as international aspects (Epstein and Buhovac 2014). This is because of the organizational structure and culture of Walmart that have helped the organization to achieve competitive advantage and success as well. Discussion: The organizational structure functions hierarchically and the main features of this structure are hierarchy and function based definition. This feature of hierarchy is associated with the vertical lines of command as well as the authority across the organizational structure. In order to provide a suitable example, it can be said that only except the Chief Executive Officer, each employee of the organization has a superior (Terpstra, et al. 2012). The line managers down to the regular staff of the Walmart stores implement directions and orders coming from the top management level of Walmart. On the contrary, the feature of function-based definition of Walmart involves employees in a group for serving certain purposes of the company. Walmart currently has a separate department for managing the human resources, another department for dealing with the information technology related issues as well as other departments for the functioning of technology (Albers et al. 2013). These are one o f those departments among numerous function based other departments. The most crucial effects of the hierarchical organizational structure of Walmart is that, it enables the managers of the organization to influence the complete organization very easily. Therefore, in this way Walmart achieves a distinguishingly effective monitoring and control mechanism. The main difficulties associated with this organizational structure are that it provides organizational flexibility as low as possible. Walmarts organizational culture is amalgamates four main components and these components affect the behavior of the employees. These components are, Service to clients, respect for the persons, striving for superiority and acting with honesty. Now, as Walmart is willing to enter the Chinese market it is quite evident that this organizational structure is ideal for the company for operating globally. On the contrary, should improve its beliefs in the context of its organizational culture. Though these beliefs are ideal for the company, it is evaluated on several grounds for not addressing the concerns of the employees regarding lower wages (Albers et al. 2013). Therefore, the company should look into this matter and try to solve this problem as effectively as possible. On the other hand, as the company is planning to operate in China, it should also take into account the operability of its organizational structure and culture in accordance with the Chinese culture and mentality of the residents of the country (Griffin et al. 2016). In order to conclude, it can be said that the organizational culture and structure of Walmart is quite well for operating in Chinese framework. However, the company should try to develop a better understanding about the Chinese market structure and cultures and thereby adapt its organizational structure and culture accordingly. Duets free essay sample

At its best, the music of Elton John reminds me of the ocean. It opens off with broad ripples of instrumental music, their sounds sparkling like rays of sunlight. As the song progresses, the music, with its ever-shifting nuances, rapidly builds to a crescendo. The uplifting impact of this intense delivery is comparable to that of a wave breaking on the shore. Finally, all is calm again until the next wave. While this is the ideal impression of Johns music, it is not always an accurate one. Johns musical output is usually brilliant, but his Duets album contains a surprisingly large amount of below par performances. What makes this even more surprising is that many of the more mediocre duets involve combinations with top musical talent, including k.d. lang and Little Richard. The first song of the album, Teardrops, (John/lang) more or less sets a precedent for subsequent duets: vanilla-flavored lyrics, a lack of intensity, and lackluster instrumental support. We will write a custom essay sample on Duets or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page But this is by no means true for every performance, as the next song, When I Think About Love (I Think About You) (John/P.M. Dawn) dazzlingly displays. This song has everything that Teardrops does not: strong contributions from both artists, a solid refrain in which John and Dawn thrust their voices forward in unison, and an altogether enjoyable sound. Happily, at a time when the album is most in need of a good song, John finally responds in style. He closes the first side with not one but two sterling efforts, A Womans Needs (John/Tammy Wynette) and the superb Dont Let the Sun Go Down on Me (John/George Michael). Dont Let the Sun Go Down on Me is pure Elton. Almost as if in realization of this, Michael takes a back seat to Elton during the song. But unlike True Love, the rhythmic sound of the piano is like the ebb and flow of the ocean, adding a steadiness and progression to the lyrics. Elton returns to his old mediocre habits on the second side. In Love Letters (John and the delightful Bonnie Raitt), the presence of Raitt and the instrumental accompaniments add a country-western flavor to the song. While the slow pace of Love Letters contrasts with the upbeat style of Im Your Puppet, both are welcome changes from the drab format of the first four songs on the second side. Born to Lose (John/Leonard Cohen) creates an entirely new mood. The song itself conjures up scenes of some bluesy 1930s nightclub. Cohens deep, gravelly voice adds to the mournful but resigned tone of the song. Cognizant of this, Elton now is the one who takes a back seat and lets Cohen and the piano do their thing. The last song on the album, Duets for One (a solo performance), is something of an anticlimax, but it closes off Duets on a high note. Upon listening to Duets, one might wonder why so many songs are so bland. The quality of the songs chosen was mediocre at best. Others, such as Teardrops and The Power, may have combined too much talent. It is interesting that two of the albums better offerings, When I Think About Love (I Think About You) and A Womans Needs, are both duets with lesser-known artists. Whatever the reasons, much of Duets is comprised of underachieving efforts from performers with great potential
